OUR PROGRAM
The NAP Global Network worked with the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries in South Africa from 2017 to 2020 to advance their NAP process.
We helped create an enabling environment for the implementation of adaptation actions through targeted technical inputs to the process, as well as support for capacity development and stakeholder engagement.

2023 - 2024
- Updating provincial climate change adaptation strategies: Supported provincial governments in Free State and Mpumalanga to update their adaptation strategies to align with the National Adaptation Strategy, the country’s NAP.
- Training on adaptation in the water resource management sector: Provided training to more than 400 staff of municipal governments to conduct risk and vulnerability assessments for their water management areas and to use the results for adaptation planning.

2020
- NAP Approved by Cabinet: South Africa’s National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (NCCAS), its NAP document, was approved by Cabinet. We provided on-going technical support to the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) since 2018, in both advancing the NAP process and finalizing the NAP document.
- Vulnerability and risk assessment for the mining sector: Provided a better understanding to decision-makers in the mining sector of the risks associated with climate change and options for reducing vulnerability.
- Resource mobilization strategy: Government actors were equipped with a concrete strategy for mobilizing resources when implementing priority adaptation actions in the NAP.
- Workshop | Conducting a Risk and Vulnerability Assessment for the Mining Sector in South Africa: Discussed key findings from a situational analysis carried out by the South African Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy regarding the interactions between climate change and the mining sector, including implications for vulnerable natural resources such as water, land and energy.

2019
- Technical training on integrating climate science in policy-making: Increased the capacity of national and provincial government representatives to integrate climate change in decision-making, towards informed implementation of the NAP.
- Stakeholder engagement in the NAP process: Incorporated the perspectives and expertise of adaptation stakeholders in the NAP document, increasing the ownership of the NAP process.
- Costing of adaptation actions in the NAP: Provided government decision-makers with a more informed basis on how to mobilize resources for the implementation of the NAP.
